Inspiring Purpose – Global Citizens in the Making is a well established character discovery activity for young people 10-16 all over the Commonwealth. We use a special 3-page poster template to engage young people in an educational process involving enhancing their self-knowledge and self-awareness, searching for inspiration and defining their aspirations for the future. More than 300,000 young people have taken part over the last ten years.

The programme was originally designed to support the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and was part of Legacy 2014. We are also working with Gold Coast 2018 and intend to continue to work towards Birmingham 2022.

With feedback from teachers and pupils, we have now developed an improved version of the poster template which is more generic and can be used in a wider context outside of the Commonwealth Games.

Inspiring Purpose shares the values set out in the Commonwealth Charter (www.thecommonwealth.org/our-charter) and its commitment to support young people, with a special emphasis on tolerance, respect and understanding, freedom of expression and gender equality within an overall context promoting democracy, human rights, peace, environmental protection and sustainable development.

“In our school we find this programme an incredibly useful tool in helping pupils to reflect honestly on their own character. A task which many find challenging, but it so useful, as self-knowledge is fundamental to any individual’s development. I can wholeheartedly endorse the Inspiring Purpose Poster Programme as encouragement for flagging teachers; reading about how positive, honest and determined our young people is a comfort!”

Moyra De Soyza, (Teacher) St Andrews RC High School

“It has helped me to conceptualise a new vision about myself and how to go forward in the future. Thanks for helping me understand myself!”

Ishaan Bhaskar, (Pupil) Indraprastha International School, India

“The importance of the programme cannot be underestimated in our current climate with all the conflicting pressures and influences at work on the youth of today. At the heart of the values and poster programme is the encouraging and nurturing of our young people to be the best that they can be and to recognise that they themselves have the key to being the change they want to see in the world.”

Carol Gollop, (Teacher) Inverurie Academy

“I have learned a lot about myself and my character. I have learned how I can help the world to live in peace and harmony.”

Christabelle Muscat, (Pupil) St Ignatius College, Malta

What is Inspiring Purpose?

Inspiring Purpose is a personal development teaching resource. Using our unique poster template, pupils are guided through a journey of self-reflection and inspiration where they reflect upon their own personal strengths, explore who and what inspires them and then draw on these insights to define their future aspirations.

Designed specifically for 10 to 16 year olds, Inspiring Purpose, this Commonwealth Edition of Inspiring Purpose is supported by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. The original values poster template was developed from Sir John Templeton’s Worldwide Laws of Life which he published in 1997.

The aim and vision of the Inspiring Purpose programme is to give young people the opportunity to think about their values and character strengths whilst also reflecting on who or what inspires them and their aspirations and goals for the future.

Our mission is to help young people set goals, demonstrate future-mindedness and develop a sense of purpose. To inspire them to find opportunities and causes that they care about, and to encourage them to get involved in taking action on issues.

Inspiring Purpose enables pupils to explore their character, ideals and values through a unique poster template using web-based resources. The programme is ideal for 10-16 year olds and can be used with a small group, or an entire year group.

We ask teachers to submit their five most inspirational pieces of work to us by a set deadline 31st May 2018 so that their pupils can have the opportunity to receive awards and certificates for their work.

You will find a Teacher Manual to assist with the delivery of the programme available here. This manual is designed to provide you with suggestions for implementing Inspiring Purpose and includes recommended activities for each of the poster sections. It isn’t enough to have pupils complete the sections of the poster on their own without any preparation. It is important to lay the groundwork for pupils to complete the poster. This will include having pupils engage in several activities that encourage personal exploration.
